Low Risk is <25 cases / 100,000
Moderate Risk is 25-75 cases / 100,000
High Risk is >75 cases / 100,000
Additionally Volleyball has been defined as a Moderate Risk sport. Football and Basketball by comparison are defined as High Risk Sports. Each designation allows for different parameters. All of these parameters are found here.

ON HOLD FOR NOW
With the fall season moving to spring, we have no volleyball activities until Sept 28th at the earliest. We do have a new off-season starting Sept 28th-November, but we are TBD on if we will open the gym.
Until then we are on hold, asking the girls to stay active and to be healthy.
I’ll be in touch with updates as they arise.

INTRODUCING 'KHSVB GET FIT'

While we could much prefer to be in the gym, we do have home workouts available for all players. Senior lead workouts are being posted to our Instagram account and texted to underclassmen each week by the seniors. The workouts are half jump-training and body-weight workouts.
There are 3x workouts each week to do every other day, Mo, We and Fr. The girls are encouraged to do cardio Tu and Th and take the weekends off.
The girls can also post a picture during or after their workout to Insta and tag @kingsvolleyball. We'll share the picture to our story every time!

2019
STATE RECAP
The Knights traveled over to Yakima with high hopes and higher expectations for the state tournament. Things got off to a great start with the most logical and reasonable draw we've seen in years. King's would come in with an undefeated record and a #2 ranking by the Washington State Coaches Association and face Okanogan in the first round. The Knights would easily sweep Okanogan in 3-sets and then face a familiar foe in Meridian in the quarter-finals. Meridian got past Castle Rock to face the Knights for the second time in two weeks. Previously, King's faced Meridian in the District 1 Tournament at home in the Mike Martin Gym. The result as State would be the same as before, another 3-0 sweep.
The two wins assured the Knights of a semi-final showdown with Lakeside, who we have faced in each of the last 3 years at State. This year, Lakeside was #3 ranked and formidable. The winner would play for a State Championship. The match was tense with outstanding play from both teams. The 3rd set would see the Knights comeback from a 24-20 deficit to win the set and the match! Set scores were close. 25-18, 25-22, 27-25. With little time to celebrate, the stage was set, the Knights would play the Chelan Goats, once again, for the State Championship.
This was the 3rd time these two teams would play each other for the state title. King's won in 2009 but Chelan returned the favor the following year. Both teams this time were undefeated heading into the much anticipated match-up. King's jumped out first with a hard-fought very close 1st set (27-25) and then followed that up with a convincing 2nd set win (25-16) to move to within a set of a state title. Credit Chelan for bouncing back in the 3rd set to take a decisive 22-14 lead. The Knight's caught fire behind Olivia Hjelle's amazing serves and Alli Hansen converting on offense to not only close the gap but take a 23-22 lead. But the Goats showed great composure to side-out and score two consecutive points with the serve and claim the 3rd set, 25-22. It was the first set dropped for the Knights since October 14th vs Eastside Catholic. Fatigue emerged for the Knights early in the 4th set but credit to Chelan for catching fire and taking the set 25-21. The 5th set for the State Title. An incredible match was on display for everyone in the Sundome as the Knights jumped out first with a strong lead of 8-4. Once again though the Goats would not go quietly, as they began chipping away to tie the game at 8-8 and then ultimately take the lead at 11-10. the Knights would fight back and have match point at 15-14 but Chelan would sideout and score consecutive points and win the decisive set 17-15.
Fitting that an incredible match capped an amazing season. No, not the finish anyone had in mind but with time, perspective will allow all to see the season and this team for what it was. One of if not the best teams we've ever had at King's. Hard to say goodbye to this special team but we now look forward to a great celebration at our season ending banquet on December 8th.

THE STAGE IS SET!
The Knights have passed their final test in flying colors, capturing the Bi-District Championship with a 3-0 sweep of future conference rival, Overlake. In a road playoff match, the Bi-District title serves only to seed both teams who had already earned their birth to State by capturing their District titles. Still, neither team wanted to lose a match just before State and the Knights came out swinging, putting Overlake on their heals out of the gate. Credit to the Owls though for showing composure after dropping the 1st set, as they kept swinging and made things interesting in both final sets but the Knights firepower and serving proved too lethal in the long-run.
The State brackets are now released and the path is set. The Knights will open the State tournament in the Yakima Sundome, at 5:15pm on Friday vs Okanogan. The winner will play again on Friday at 8:15pm, facing the victor of the Meridian vs Castle Rock match.
Here we GO! Hope to see you in Yakima!

PLAYOFFS 2019
Thanks to a North Sound Conference title, the Knights got bonus matches at home. With consecutive 3-0 wins over Sultan and Meridian, the Knights will add another chapter to our longstanding rivalry with Lynden Christian as the two teams will face-off again for the District Championship. Just a year ago, the Knights faced LC at their place in this same match and came away with an amazing 5-set victory. The two teams face-off again after LC beat South Whidbey (3-0) and Nooksack Valley (3-1) in the opposte side of the District 1 playoff-bracket. The winning team on Tuesday, 8pm in Coupeville will claim the District title and punch their ticket to state in the process.

a senior night to remember!
With one of the all-time best crowds on-hand, the Knights seized the moment against Coupeville to sweep their way to a convincing 3-0 win on Senior Night! The win clinched the conference title for King's with one conference match still to be played at Cedar Park Christian. The match will be the final matches for JV and C who have had excellent seasons as well. The Knights varsity is now 13-0 overall and will host rounds 1 and 2 of the District 1 Tournament at King's, November 2nd.

final conference matches
It's been a great season so far by all measures. Varsity is 11-0 with non-conference wins over Lakeside, Skyline, North Creek and Eastside Catholic. Also strong showings at both all classifications tournaments in Yakima and Spokane, highlighted by a 2nd place in the Sundome Festival.
Looking to close out the regular-season strong with our fiinal two matches at home vs South Whidbey and Coupeville. The Coupeville match will likely determine the conference championship. With a win, the Knights will claim the North Sound Conference title.
Thursday is also Senior Night where we will honor our five amazing seniors and their families. These girls have meant so much to the program and we'll be sad to see them go! Ellie Gaenz, Olivia Hjelle, Katy Rettenmier, Alli Hansen and Ava Mason are all amazing players and even better people! We're so grateful for the impact they've made on the program.
We close out the regular season on Monday, October 27th on the road at Cedar Park Christian. The District 1 Playoffs will see the Knights playing at HOME on Saturday, November 2nd. More to come! Go Knights!!

CLUB INFORMATIONAL MEETING
Thanks to all that attended our Club Volleyball 101 meeting. Coach Foley provided and overview landscape the world of club volleyball in the Puget Sound Region including how to get started, how tryouts work, the various clubs including All Out and provided the program's position on the importance of club volleyball.
The meeting also included some simple ways to get your elementary or junior high age daughter (or son) started in volleyball.
Coach Foley has been coaching club volleyball since 2005. All 3 of his daughters have played club. Foley is also an executive board member of the Puget Sound Region of USA Volleyball.

september sizzle
The 2019 Knights had a great start to the season in September with a 4-0 month including a 2nd place finish in Yakima and a 21st overall finish in Spokane. Signature wins over Lakeside, Skyline and North Creek also had the Knights feeling optimistic about their chances in 2019 but the signature losses might help out more than any of these wins. Tahoma and Chiawana both played the Knights tough in Spokane with the former winning the entire tournament. These losses should prove helpful in the long-run.
The road is once again paved with many tough competitors again in 1A. Chelan, Lakeside (9 Mile Falls), Charles Wright, La Salle and Freeman appear to also be off to good starts and we can always count on Lynden Christian to be tough again. Should be interesting to see it all unfold again in 1A as we enter October.

a great day in yakima
Back about 10 years ago we would routinely compete on Friday in the small school Sundome Festival. After a few wins, we decided to try our hand against the big schools on Saturday and haven't looked back. We've knocked on the door including 2018's 3rd place finish but haven't broken through.
2019's performance will not soon be forgotten as the Knights played its best volleyball of the year thus far and sustained it throughout the day rolling through pool play with wins over Burlington-Edison 25-17, 25-21, Peninsula 25-19, 25-19 and Kamiakin 25-18, 25-15. In bracket play King's would then defeat Coeur d’Alene 25-21, 25-18, followed by the 2018 2B State Champs, La Conner 25-23, 25-13. The finals would feature a match-up with 4A Rogers that was back and forth 23-35, 25-23, 15-17. The 2nd place finish is our best ever finish in the big school (3A/4A) tournament!

FIRST MATCHES OF 2019 - LAKESIDE AND SKYLINE
Varsity had a great weekend at Lake Cushman for our 2019 Team Retreat! The girls were challenged with a big hike and climb of Mt Ellinor which is the southern most highest peak of the Olympic mountains. The girls had to dig deep to carry some big elevation to reach the summit. We were so impressed with great attitudes and teamwork along the way!
We get it going finally this week with non-conference matches! First up is 3A power Lakeside. Lakeside was the 3A runner-up in last year's state tournament. We expect a great match for both JV and Varsity. JV goes at 5pm, varsity 7pm. (Bus departs at 3:45pm)
A trip to Issaquah on Thursday to face 4A Skyline with all teams in action. JV/C get it going at 5:15 while Varsity starts at 7pm. (Bus departs at 3:15pm)
Finally, both Varsity and JV are in action this weekend with tournaments! JV is at Bothell while Varsity heads to the Sundome for the annual Sundome Festival! First match of the Knights in Yakima is 9am on Saturday.

WHAT A GREAT SUMMER!
A huge thank you to all of our athletes and families for being so engaged this summer. Your commitment is amazing and we're sure to see the fruits of that labor pay off over time. Another big summer schedule of practices, open gyms, tournaments, team camp, summer league and our own kids camps made for a very busy June and July.
From a competitive standpoint, our “King’s 1” group had an amazing summer, playing 21 total matches against 17 different schools, going 17-0 in those matches with 2 “ties” (1-1, 2-set matches). We played a total of 49 sets and won 40 (.816), capturing championships at La Conner, the Friendship Tournament and the Shorecrest Summer League.
We now turn our attention to the fall season which begins with tryouts starting August 26th. We're thrilled about the future of the program thanks to the current and incoming girls who are already working hard to be great!
2019 should be another exciting season for the program!

friendship champs

King’s 2 gets a ton of credit for a big-time learning experience in a varsity level tournament. We were impressed with great attitudes all day with limited playing time for many and some lopsided results.
King’s 1 had quite a day, with big wins over some good upper-classification volleyball programs. Pool play wins over Kamiak (4A), Bothell (4A) and split-sets with 2A Lynden. Playoff wins over Snohomish (3A) and North Creek (4A) set-up a rematch and a 2-set sweep of Lynden in the final.
Consecutive tournament wins the last two weeks! This was our first win in the Friendship since 2014. Open Gyms now for the rest of June before GMS Team Camp the week of July 8th.
Also, we'll be competing in the Shorecrest Summer League on Monday nights in July! Go Knights!

THE 15TH ANNUAL FRIENDSHIP TOURNAMENT
The 15th Annual Friendship Tournament is Saturday, June 15th at King's. The Knights will feature two teams again this year, with a "King's 1" roster and a "King's 2" roster. This varsity level tournament is always a great day of volleyball with a fun and easy format. Once again we'll have some really good teams come to King's:
Thanks to all of our families with the volunteer effort! It takes a village!

summer in high gear - already winners!
The 2019 Knights, or a spring version, provided an early glimpse of possible things to come with a strong performance, featuring wins over two 2018 state title teams in Lynden Christian and La Conner, in our first competition of the year up in La Conner High School on June 8th. The Knights cruised past Christian Faith and Sedro Wooley in Pool Play but split sets with the host, La Conner to close the morning. The quarter-finals would feature a abnormally early match vs Lynden Christian and an even more unusual easy sweep of the Lyncs, who were clearly short-handed for this early tournament. But so too were the Knights, with key players missing. The Knights would get a rematch with La Conner and take the final with a resounding 2-0 sweep and the first win in this annual tournament in recent memory!
2019 SPRING PARENT MEETING - RECAP
Thank you all for a great turn-out to our 2019 Spring & Summer Parent Meeting. The meeting was held on April 30th with the request that at least one parent attend from all families. An impressive turnout for this annual meeting where Coach Foley laid-out the vision for the program and the objectives this summer. Attached is the overview presentation shared at the meeting.
While nothing we offer is mandatory, the closest thing to it is undoubtedly our Gold Medal Squared Team Camp, July 8-11 in MMG. Registration for Team Camp is now open. Please visit www.goldmedealsquared.com to get signed-up now.

2019 key dates
2019 plans are well underway and failing to plan is planning to fail. With that, please plan on making our spring and summer activities an important part of your plans. While nothing we offer is mandatory, we consider Team Camp a must for anyone that is serious about being a part of the program.
2018
2018 BANQUET
By any metric, this has been an amazing year! On the court where we saw the entire program combine for an astonishing record of 45-2. Our C-Team rose from the ashes from possibly not happening at all, to go undefeated in match play, 11-0 on the year. And our JV team did something no other JV team in our history has done, pulling off an "immaculate season," going 14-0 in match play and 1st place at the annual Sundome Festival tournament in Yakima (back-to-back) and 1st place at the annual Bothell Tournament, which was our first ever 1st place finish there!
Varsity also had an amazing season, dominating conference play with a 10-0 record with only 2 dropped sets….non-conference wins over historically strong 3A/4A programs and strong tournament finishes with a 3rd place finish in Yakima and a 3rd place also in Spokane, tying our best ever finish at the all classifications, Linda Sheridan Classic. Finally, a 6-1 record in post-season highlighted by a District title in enemy territory and a Bi-District title, for first time since 2013. Lastly, a 3rd place finish at state.
2018 was a great year full of amazing performances, crazy plays and funny moments. A successful by any metric as we were constantly encouraged by girls having fun with one another, laughing and making incredible memories. On buses, in locker rooms, in practices. Tons of improvement this year too! The developmental aspect to the experience was on fire this year as we were blown away by the growth of so many from back in June all the way through November.
Thanks to all of our families who greatly blessed us with their time and talents through volunteering. It takes a village for sure and we're so grateful to all!

3rd in STATE
Hard to find the words to properly convey the emotions of a 3rd place finish at State. Such are the days for this program when finishing 3rd feels awful. The Knights yet again battled through a tough draw at State to pick-up wins on day 1 over Lakeside (9 Mile Falls) and La Salle. Two very quality teams that just so happened to be in our path back to the final day of the season. A King's fan can only wonder what an easier draw must be like at State? We might not ever know so we continue to control all we can control and face each team lined-up in our path. A 3-1 win over Lakeside, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20 set-up the late night showdown with La Salle. The game didn't start until well after 9pm on Friday but a great match ensued with the Knights falling behind by scores of 9-2 and 11-2 in both set 1 and set 2. Ultimately King's would prevail 25-18, 25-16, 25-21 and advance to Saturday's semis vs Charles Wright.
Charles Wright Academy featured the best overall hitter in the tournament in Senior and University of Houston commit, Abbie Jackson. The 6' Outside Hitter did not disappoint with an array of attacks that challenged the Knights. King's would drop the first set 22-25 but come roaring back to win sets 2 and 3, 25-13 and 25-22. Set 4 was a nail-biter with the Knights falling behind only to tie the score and 22 and then survive set point at 22-24 before tying it again but ultimately falling 24-26. The 5th set also was a battle but the Knights and our back-to-back title dreams fell 13-15.
With emotions flowing the girls faced a new challenge, to win the 3rd/4th place match and preserve a different tradition of sorts. King's has never lost back-to-back matches at State. In fact, King's has never lost more than one match at State. The girls had to dig deep against a pesky Granger team that was more than thrilled to be placing for 3rd place. With a visibly emotional team, the Knights took the floor and dropped the first set as the match was played simultaneously with the championship match featuring Lynden Christian and Charles Wright. King's would find the necessary composure to overcome the set t loss to win the next three and take 3rd place in State for 2018.
Not the end we had in mind from the beginning but ultimately our objective was to commit to being the very best we could be, on and off the floor. A state title is an outcome and ultimately not totally within our control. We are proud of the girls and their accomplishments this season and for their unwavering commitment. This team will go down as one of the best we've ever had. We now look forward to celebrating the season at our annual team banquet on December 2nd.
Go Knights!

We now look forward to celebrating the season at our annual team banquet on December 2nd.

district and bi-district champs HEADING TO STATE
For the first time since 2013, King's takes the District and Bi-District titles with wins over Lynden Christian and Overlake. The LC match saw the Knights grab set 1 at LC but the Lyncs came roaring back to take the 2nd and 3rd sets. With control of the match at home in front of the LC faithful, the Knights found a spark and mounted a comeback in set 4 that would push the match to a decisive 5th set. The first 5-set match the Knights have played since Archbishop Murphy in October 2017. King's would jump out early in set 5 and see the Lyncs tie it at 3-3 and then tie it again at 9-9. King's would find separation finally at 13-11 and convert a huge defensive play to make it 14-11, match point. 15-11 as the final and a District Championship.
The following Saturday, King's would sweep Overlake 3-0 to win the Bi-District Championship. The blind-draw for 1A would once again provide a tough road at State with a round 1 match-up vs Lakeside of 9 Mile Falls. These same two teams met in the first round of 2017. Just how far the Knights will go in 2018 remains to be seen. Several quality teams go to Yakima in 2018 with a realistic shot of winning a state title.

DISTRICT TOURNEY ROUND 1 & 2
What a fun final week of the regular season! C-Team rocked it with a win in their final match vs Shorecrest on Monday. JV closed out an undefeated season on Thursday vs Cedar Park and Varsity took care of business with wins on Tuesday at Coupeville and home on Senior Night, Thursday vs Cedar Park. Conference title in hand, Varsity also won round 1 and 2 District Tournament matches on Saturday vs Granite Falls and Nooksack Valley to advance to the District Championship on Tuesday (6:30pm) at Lynden Christian.
it's all about post-season
As the Knights look to close the first ever regular season of the North Sound Conference, minds begin to turn to the post-season. King's has taken care of business as forecasted in conference play thus far. Final matches at Coupeville and home against Cedar Park Christian, set the table for another post-season that is full of unknowns and very worthy competitors.
The District 1 Tournament opens at the home venues of the North Sound Conference 1st place team (King's) and the Northwest Conference 1st Place team (Lynden Christian). Win two matches on Saturday, Oct 27th yet another chapter in the rivalry between King's and LC will be added, at LC on October 30th, 6:30pm. First things first though as their are four matches prior and well, anything can happen. The Knights take nothing for granted as it was only two years ago, King's missed going to State for the first time in 12 years.
Thursday's final regular season home match vs Cedar Park Christian is also Senior Night. We'll honor our six incredible seniors before the match. Anna Hochstein, Adair Rosenau, Ali Davenport, Zoe Graff, Dominique Kirton and Baily McCutchen have meant so much to the program through the years. Their selfless example of servant leadership is a model for all to follow.

OCTOBER GRIND
Big resounding wins last week vs previously undefeated Coupeville and 2017 3A runner-up, the 8th ranked Mercer Island Islanders. 3-0 sweeps at home in each match and now the Knights have sole possession of 1st place and a path forward to the first ever North Sound Conference title. Need to take care of business, stay focused and take it one match at a time through the remainder of the October conference schedule. Road matches vs Cedar Park Christian and Granite Falls. Home match vs Sultan, road matches on the Whidbey Island vs South Whidbey and Coupeville before closing the regular season and Senior Night on October 25th.

3RD PLACE TIES FOR BEST FINISH EVER IN SPOKANE
Not since our 2007 Team has a King's team finished as high as 3rd place overall in the 64-Team all-classification Linda Sheridan Classic. The Knights would breeze through Pool Play with 2-0 wins over Hanford, Mead (JV) and East Valley. With 1st place in hand, the Knights would once again advance to the Platinum bracket, for the 3rd consecutive year, at Lewis & Clark High School.
Bracket play would see the Knights show they belong with a convincing 2-0 win over Southridge, followed by what looked to be a formidable showdown with 4A Coeur d'Alene from Idaho. Versus CDA's imposing front-line, the Knights played their best volleyball of the day and perhaps their best of the season and won a convincing 2-0 sweep to advance to the semi-finals and a 1A showdown vs Chelan. The Goats have a very good team and the Knights stumbled out of the gates to drop the first set. We looked tired to start off and paid the price but bounced back, finding a groove in the 2nd set. With a trip to the finals in the balance, the 3rd set featured strong play and sideout volleyball throughout. Credit to Chelan for picking up the 3rd set win, 17-15. Chelan would move on to face a very strong Tahoma (4A) team that would not be denied, winning easily 2-0.
1A is strong this year. In two consecutive 2018 tournaments, Yakima and Spokane, the final-four in each has been comprised of 3x 1A teams. In Yakima it was LC, Cascade and King's. In Spokane it was Chelan, Freeman and King's. The road back to a state title looks to be stacked with several teams that have a chance. Including the Knights!

ANOTHER TRIP ACROSS THE PASS
The Knights will head back over the pass to Spokane for the annual Linda Sheridan Classic. Some of the best teams in the state make this tournament a center-piece to their fall schedule as it represents a great test at the right time. The Knights will play 4A Hanford and 2A East Valley of Spokane in Pool Play. There are some great teams in the field and no matter how it goes, the Knights will gain some much needed information about who they are and what needs to be addressed when they return for October conference play.

FLASHES OF BRILLIANCE
The Knights played some great volleyball in spurts this past week. A convincing 3-0 sweep at Redmond followed by a tough 3-1 loss at North Creek were great table-setters for our first 2018 trip to the Sundome for the annual Sundome Volleyball Festival. That North Creek match was just what the doctor ordered for this 2018 team looking for experience against strong competition. North Creek is a good 4A team with strong hitters on the pins and one of the best libero's we've seen. After dropping the first set, the Knights took set 2 and with the sets tied at 1-1, King's held a 24-21 lead but unfortunately couldn't close it out, losing 24-26. Serve-receive would fail us to open set 4 and in the end North Creek took it convincingly, proving to be the better team on the night. However, a valuable experience for sure and one we may look back on with gratefulness.
The Knights enjoyed their draw as a 1 seed in pool play in Yakima, easily dispatching Washougal (2-0), West Valley of Spokane (2-0) and Eastmont (2-0) to earn the overall #1 seed into bracket play for this "big school" tournament. An opening playoff 2-0 win vs 1A Naches Valley set the stage for a semi-final showdown vs our friends at 4A Richland. Richland has a strong team this year but the Knights jumped out to an early lead, showing no signs of intimidation. Credit to Richland though for taking advantage of circumstances to chip away and battle back in that first set to ultimately prevail, 24-26. Richland also took the 2nd set to end King's bid to win the Sundome Festival but the Knights achieved the broader objective of learning and growing together as a team.
We now open conference play with Granite Falls, Sultan and South Whidbey before heading back over the pass again to the annual Linda Sheridan Classic.

BIG TEST AHEAD
Skyline came into Mike Martin to open the 2018 KING'S VOLLEYBALL season and the Knights took care of business with a straight-set win 25-20, 25-12, 25-21 to open the year 1-0. In fact all 3 teams came away with victories in straight-sets! But the road ahead gets a little rocky with a good test on the road this week against 2 more 4A opponents in Redmond and North Creek. The latter, split sets against the Knights at the Lakeside Jamboree, adding more intrigue to the match. Both Varsity and JV travel to the annual Sundome Volleyball Festival on Sept 15th to face more upper-classification competition. It will also be the first time back to the Sundome since last November when the Knights made a surprising run over a gauntlet of top ranked opponents to capture the 1A Title. A brand new team with new faces in big roles make for a different and in some ways, a harder challenge this season. The long-held mantra of Any Team, Any Time, Any Place will surely be tested this week!

THE FALL SEASON SET TO BEGIN
Two weeks of tryouts, forming teams and practices gave way to a Jamboree at Lakeside High School. The Knights played two set matches against 4A North Creek, 2A Lakeside and 4A Glacier Peak. Each match was a split as the Knights worked through various lineups, moving girls around, in and out. At the end of the night, King's played all 13 varsity girls and came away with some valuable information against good competition. That info will no doubt fuel the remaining practices in preparation for the beginning of the 2018 fall schedule as the Knights open up on Thursday, Sept 6th at home vs 4A Skyline. First up though is the annual picture day and Intra-Squad scrimmage on Tuesday night in Mike Martin. The Red vs White scrimmage will include 3 sets to 25 and a running score as we see all 3 teams with combinations of all rosters.
The road back-to-state is officially underway and we're excited about not just the varsity squad but the whole program, every girl in it!

KIRTON HIRE COMPLETES AMAZING 2018 COACHING STAFF

Coach Foley announced his final coaching staff hire, with the addition of King's legend, Joclyn Kirton. Kirton was a stand-out in the program from 2009-11, helping the Knights to the state title her sophomore year and becoming the program's first sister combo to win a title with older sister, Dionna. "I'm truly honored to have former players come back as coaches after their playing days are over. Joclyn was such a pleasure to coach and now she brings all of her experience to the girls in the program who will benefit greatly from her wisdom," said Foley.
Kirton joins an already stellar coaching staff that includes JV Head Coach Josh McCorkle, Varsity Assistant Alysanne Stack and C-Team Head Coach, Deri Kispert. "This staff is certainly one of the best we've ever assembled here at King's and I'm looking forward to partnering with each to make 2018 an unforgettable ride," said Foley.

COACH FRANSEN DECIDES TO STEP DOWN
Six years ago, in 2012 the program reached a crossroads, when then coach, Steve Bain decided to step-down to pursue coaching on the collegiately level at Northwest University. After the coaching search dust settled, a familiar face in Jeff Fransen stepped into Coach Bain's recently vacated big shoes. After all, Bain had built the program into a 1A power-house over a 10-year period that routinely competed for the state title year in and year out. In many ways a daunting task to take over the program when it was clicking on all cylinders. Fransen would inherit a varsity team that would have to replace the 9 seniors that had just graduated, including his own daughter, Caitlin. A special 2011 team would be hard to replace but the 7 would-be 2012 seniors were anxiously awaiting their turn on JV. Brilliantly, Fransen not only retained but built upon the existing high standards and legacy over the course of his 6 years to keep the traditions alive and well, complete with a tenure defining state title on his way out, last November.
We thank Jeff for his dedication and sacrifice over these past 6 years. Fransen's teams would go a combined 113-19 for an astonishing .832 winning percentage. His teams would trophy at state in 5 of the 6 years including two 5th place finishes (2012 & 2015), one 7th place (2013), a 2nd place (2014) and 2017's 1st Place title. Fransen was named the 2012 and 2017 Cascade Conference Coach of the Year as well as 2017's WIAA 1A AP Coach of the Year. Most importantly, Fransen's strong Christian leadership example provided the guiding light for the hundreds of girls in the program during his tenure. Fransen promises to remain close to the program as he changes his focus to family and his business.
Next time you see Coach Fransen, be sure to wish him well and thank him as we do for all that he has done for King's!

STATE CHAMPS!
Even with a healthy mindset as we arrived into Yakima, we were reminded at every turn by fellow coaches that our draw was brutal. Apologies greeted us by many who saw our draw as a heavy half-bracket gauntlet that would eat up even the best of teams. After all, the opener pitted our #4 ranked Knights vs the #1 ranked and defending champions, the unbeaten Lakeside (9 Mile Falls). IF you can survive that, you'll most likely face another unbeaten, #5 Castle Rock. Win that, and most likely you'll rematch vs Lynden Christian who is #3 ranked with 3 straight appearances in the state final match and just beat you in the District Championship, on your own court! If you somehow survive all of that, you will in all likelihood see the #2 ranked Cascade Kodiaks who would have eased on into the final match in a very soft half of the bracket.
The young King's squad would adapt well to the role of underdog as the Knights came out swinging vs Lakeside. In a thrilling and dominant fashion, King's would sweep Lakeside 3-0 to advance. "Survive and advance" became the mantra as King's faced the next challenge in unbeaten and 5th ranked, Castle Rock. The Knights would again sweep its way (3-0) straight to the semi-finals and a rematch vs #3 ranked, Lynden Christian. With the opportunity to play for the title hanging in the balance, the Knights faced-off against a Lyncs team that had won the past 5 matchups and 2 of the past 3 state titles. King's would once again come out strong with a 1st set win 25-22. The experienced Lyncs showed great poise to bounce-back and capture a hard-fought 2nd set, 29-27. Tied-up at 1-1 in the best of 5 semi-final, the Knights would seize the momentum again with a convincing 25-17 3rd set win. The 4th set was back-and-forth all the way until the Knights pulled away to win it 25-22! The celebration would have to be brief as the Knights would play for a Sate title in under 2 hours against #2 ranked and heavily favored, Cascade of Leavenworth.
King's would once again come out swinging in the final as the girls would not be denied. Having endured the gauntlet there was a new found level of play that had previously not been seen as the Knights would take set 1, 25-12. King's would lose the 2nd set 25-23 but with the set-score tied a 1-1, the Knights would retake control winning the 3rd set 25-21. Up 2-1 with the state trophy sitting courtside, the Knights would leave no doubt winning the 4th set 25-10! The ensuing pig-pile showcased the raw emotion of victory against all odds. King's would win it's 3rd State title and first since 2009.
Senior co-captains Elle Mason and Tessa Foley would lead the way for the Knights. Key contributions from the junior hitter tandem of Baily McCutchen and Dominique Kirton provided balance to the fire-power and all-round dominance of sophomore phenom, Alli Hansen. Strength in the middle from senior, Sydney Jones and freshman, Noelle Alberda were key as were the contributions of junior, Zoe Graff.
We love these girls so much and bid farewell to our seniors who made such an impact on the program and leave an enduring legacy for those that follow. Thank you Alexis Graham, Elle Mason, Sadee Marshall-Inman, Sydney Jones and Tessa Foley.
Thanks to our parents for all of the support all season long! Special thanks to those that travelled over the pass to Yakima to cheer us on. A small but powerful contingent!

It's good to be back
While it was never taken for granted, missing State in 2016 was a harsh reminder that nothing is given. Yet it still took a loser-out match against Meridian in the Bi-District tournament to earn King's a trip back to the Yakima Sundome and the State Tournament. The Knights swept Meridian 3-0 on Saturday to punch its ticket.
With the draw all set, King's will face Lakeside (9 Mile Falls) in the opening round on Friday, 3:15pm. Lakeside is the defending state champ and a worthy opponent for sure. The teams faced each other this year in the annual Linda Sheridan Classic over in Spokane with Lakeside coming out on top in the one game to 25 consolation match, 26-24. The rematch is on the big-stage of the State Tournament and these Knights are thrilled to have the opportunity. Go Knights!

Post-Season is here
The post-season is here and the Knights took care of business in round 1 of the District 1 Tournament on Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Nooksack Valley, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19. Meanwhile Lynden Christian advanced past South Whidbey in a hard fought 4-set match in Lynden. So the table is set and another chapter in this rivalry is scheduled for Tuesday, October 31st at 7pm in Mike Martin.
The Knights relied on a strong serve, serve-receive game to find the separation vs Nooksack. 19 kills from Alli Hansen along with 41 assists from Tessa Foley were also big reasons for the victory. Elle Mason anchored the back-row passing and defense while Noelle Alberda and Dominque Kirton contributed a big block up front. Speaking of blocking, Sydney Jones put up a monster block as well on Nooksack who were outmatched at the net. Nooksack slipped past Cedar Park Christian in 4 sets in the earlier match, after Cedar Park came back to take the 1st set.
A district championship and a return to state plus a #1 seed are on the line on Halloween night for the Knights and the Lyncs.

big wins
Over the past decade, King's has had the upper-hand in the annual rivalry with Archbishop Murphy, although the Wildcats have held bragging rights of late, with 3 straight wins including a 3-set sweep at home in September. Over the last 10 years though, 20 matches, King's has won 13, ATM 7. Even though King's has history on it's side, we were clearly the under-dog at Archbishop Murphy this time around.
Up 12-5 in the first set it appeared as though the sweep tables might be turned, but the Wildcats came storming back thanks to a strong defensive effort including a big block on our outsides. King's dropped the first set 24-26 but our young group has learned a measure of composure since the last time around and tapped into it to pick-up the next set 25-18. Credit to ATM for bouncing back with a 25-23 3rd set and the fight was on. A tense atmosphere in the gym emerged with the rowdy Wildcat fan section pumping up the crowd! The Knights responded in the 4th set 25-21 behind a balanced attack from all hitters and great serving/passing/defense. 5th set time. After some confusion at the scorers table, the Knights proved the better team on the night, winning the 5th in convincing fashion, 15-8! The win puts both teams in a position to share the conference title and snapped Archbishop's unbeaten streak.
Only one regular-season match to go, Wednesday October 25th at home vs Cedar Park Christian. We bid farewell with a pre-game ceremony to our 2017 seniors: Tessa Foley, Elle Mason, Sydney Jones, Sadee Marshall-Inman and Alexis Graham. These girls mean the world to our program. They leave behind a legacy of a commitment to excellence that will be hard to surpass.
But it ain't over yet. Hopefully much more volleyball to come as Districts, Bi-Districts and State are right around the corner!

PLATINUM IN SPOKANE
For the 2nd straight year and only the 3rd time in program history, the Knights advanced to Platinum in the Linda Sheridan Crossover Classic after a clean-sweep of Pool Play with wins over (3A) Eastmont, (4A) Lewis and Clark and St. Marie’s of Idaho. Our bracket first match was a 3-game victory over (4A) Jackson. Unfortunately we stumbled in the quarters against Gonzaga Prep but that set-up an interesting one-set to 25 match vs the defending 1A champs and #1 1A ranked, Lakeside (9 Mile Falls). We fell to Lakeside 24-26 in an intense battle, complete with some very questionable officiating but the game was a possible Sundome preview this November. The overall finish goes down as a '9th place" but the young Knights proved they can play with anyone in any classification!
The tournament always teaches us much about who we are presently and what we need to focus on moving forward and this year was no exception. We love this team and can't wait to look at the film and get back in the gym to keep working on improving.
We turn our attention back to conference play with 4 of our next 5 on the road vs Cedar Park, Granite Falls, Cedarcrest and a rematch vs Archbishop Murphy. Up first is Cedar Park on Thuesday and Granite this Thursday.

IT'S ALL ABOUT NOVEMBER
We wrap up a week that started with a our first loss to (2A) rival, Archbishop Murphy. The Wildcats stepped into Mike Martin and swept the match but left the young Knights with a lot to chew on and get back into the gym to work on. Next up is the annual Linda Sheridan Crossover Classic in Spokane. This is a tournament we've been going to for years to test ourselves against great competition and learn as much as we can about where we are and what we need to do to help us get to where we want to go.
We have a long way to go but it will go by quickly. Spokane will give us a good test that will help us improve.

SUNDOME SUCCESS!
It was great to get back to the Sundome after missing state in 2016. The talented 2017 Knights needed the experience of playing in the concrete enviornment of the Sundome to fuel some confidence come November. Of course we have to get there but when we do this team can draw on this experience and even though it wasn't state, we saw some great competition.
JV swept the day, taking 1st in Gold in the JV Tournament at East Valley High School. With trophy in hand, they arrived to the Sundome in time to watch Varsity close out a strong day of play against top classifications by taking 1st in Silver! Varsity dropped the first match against eventual winner, 4A West Valley of Yakima. We then split sets against 2A Pullman, followed by straight set wins over Toppenish, University, Lakewood and Post Falls of Idaho. Combined, King’s went 11-1 on the day! Thank you to our parent volunteers for taking care of the girls with great food!
We turn our attention back to conference play for 3 matches, highlighted by part 1 of our rivalry with Archbishop Murphy before going back over the pass to Spokane for the annual Linda Sheridan Classic!

OFF TO THE RACES!
The 2017 campaign is off and running after a big week of non-conference matches against bigger schools and programs. A short drive over to 4A Edmonds Woodway High School turned out to be a great season-opener test for the program. The teams previously split in spring-ball action at the Friendship tournament with Woodway eliminating King's from its own hosted tournament. King's returned the favor when it counted as all teams (C, JV and Varsity) recorded wins!
Varsity dropped the first set but came roaring back to dominate the rest of the match with brilliant offensive execution and a balanced attack. Winning both serve/serve-receive and the outside-hitter battle always ensures victory. Two nights later the Knights opened up Mike Martin Gym and welcomed 3A Holy Names in for the first-ever match-up of the two schools. C-Team dropped their match but JV and Varsity won! Varsity again would drop the first set to a scrappy Holy Names team that played good defense and served tough. Sometimes it doesn't click on all cylinders and that was certainly the case vs Holy Names but great teams find a way and King's came roaring back to take sets 2 and 3. Call it a let-up or give credit to Holy Names, or maybe a a little of both contributed to a hard fought 4th set that saw the Knights survive 5 set points to come back and win the set and match, down from 20-24 and a 26-24 final.
King's begins conference play next week with matches on the road at South Whidbey and at home vs Granite Falls.

ONE MORE WEEK OF PREP
With rosters selected and teams formed, a final week of preparation is underway as the Knights look to solidify some important items before our first competition, week of September 4th. The process of tryouts and roster selection is never easy and this year was exceptional. Difficult decisions all over the place but we settle into our teams and look to make important decisions in the coming days about specific roles. Being a part of a team requires sacrifice of individual wants to do what is best for the team. This will be the challenge for many in the coming days and weeks.
NEW FALL SPORTS REGISTRATION REQUIReMENT
Fall Sports Paperwork Requirements
Per Rick Skeen we have a new process for paperwork registration at King’s. Skeen’s email with the details:

Subject: Athletes- Register My Athlete
Dear King’s Parents - of athletes grades 7-12,
King’s Athletics is starting a new method of gathering information from parents and athletes to allow participation on sports teams. Completion of forms will now be processed through Register My Athlete, www.registermyathlete.com. We have tested the site and find the process quick and easy to follow. This will eliminate the 5 forms that you had to complete in years past. Three forms: Athlete Code, Parent Permission, Concession/Cardiac Arrest will need to be completed on the site, and you and your athlete will need to indicate that you agree after reading the information. The Emergency information will now be part of the web site. The completed physical form will need to be sent to the web site electronically. The physical will be reviewed by Rick Skeen or Dan Blackmer and accepted if all information complete.
We are looking forward to another great year!
Enjoy the remainder of the summer.
Blessings,

uw team camp - huge gains
We're not sure how many schools got to be coached by a D-1 coach this summer but most certainly very few got to be coached by a major conference champion coach like Keegan Cook. The Washington Huskies won the Pac-12 in 2016 and the King's Knights got a full-dose of their Head Coach at UW/Keegan Cook Team Camp. Coach Cook worked on the Knights court a ton, spending all of the first day with us and much of the rest of camp as well, as we went deep on all aspects of the game but none bigger than serving and passing. Not always the funnest parts to work on but hopefully the parts that will benefit us the most this upcoming fall.
We were proud of our girls as they put in the work and sacrificed other commitments, not to mention a precious late July weekend to work on their game in a hot sweaty gym on Montlake. Only time will tell if the work pays-off but we see no way it can't.
That concludes a big off-season that saw a majority of our girls highly engaged in club ball, spring practices, tournaments, open gyms, Gold Medal Squared Team Camp, the Shorewood Summer League and the UW Team Camp. Thanks to all of our families that support their duaghter's volleyball dedication. We couldn't be more excited about the season ahead!

Annual Player and Parent Meeting
The Annual Player and Parent Meeting is always the first official event of the year. Held once again in the high school library, Coach Fransen lead the families through a presentation that provided an overview of the program and a perspective on our spring/summer schedule.
If you plan on playing in the program you were at the meeting and if you plan to play in the program next fall, the following highlights were shared:
If you plan on playing in the program you were at the meeting and if you plan to play in the program next fall, the following highlights were shared:
- Being in the gym this spring and summer is of the utmost importance
- to gain an understanding of how KING'S VOLLEYBALL works, how we play, our system and methodologies
- For coaches to effectively evaluate you in a competitive environment

NO STATE BUT STILL GREAT IN 2016
For the first time in 13 years, King's will not be making the drive back over the mountains into the Yakima Valley for the State Tournament as Cedar Park Christian handed the Knights a straight-set sweep in a Bi-District loser-out in the Mike Martin Gym. A season that started strong faded fast after a year-end home-stretch gauntlet of quality opponents including Archbishop Murphy, Lynden Christian and the aforementioned Cedar Park. Those losses tested the Knights who gave it all they had but came up short.
The harsh sting is brutal but eventually time heals all wounds and the 2016 Knights will come to appreciate that it's ultimately not about wins and losses but about committing to be your best and selflessly putting aside individual wants for the collective team needs. The experience is about the journey, not the destination. We glorify God by giving our best effort and seeking His guidance throughout the journey.
The future of the KING'S VOLLEYBALL program is very strong with many young players on all 3 teams and a new class of great young talent coming into high school next year. For the seniors though, their run in the program came to a close at Bi-Districts. Marlee Young played volleyball since the 2nd grade following in the footsteps of her older sister, Payton. Marlee played club throughout and brought a joyful exuberance to the team. Megan Payne had to work hard to find her volleyball experience. Undeterred by cuts and perceived physical limitations, Megan demonstrated incredible heart as she relentlessly pursued balls on defense, sacrificing her body time after time. Anna Hoff also played volleyball since a young age but emerged on the court for varsity as a freshman libero at Archbishop Murphy. Anna blessed the program and her teammates through her selfless leadership as team co-captain and libero. Anna played incredible volleyball all season long as our best passer and defender, she will be missed. Casey Kispert will go on to play at the next level, having committed to Seattle Pacific University. Casey will be hard to replace and fondly remembered as a gifted setter who was seemingly destined to lead the Knights. Casey's leadership abilities though will be the most difficult to replace and will ultimately be her leagacy. Team Captain is a challenging responsibility but both Casey and Anna struck a nice balance of setting a high bar, holding teammates accountable and being servant leaders.
We also have to say goodbye to the families of these seniors who were a big part of the program for years. Our parents are truly the best and this program wouldn't be great without them. Special thanks of appreciation to Jay and Leslie Young who went well above and beyond the required volunteer levels. Through 2 girls over a 10 year period, the Youngs have blessed us in many ways. Jay went from booster club rep to booster club president and ultimately our announcer and DJ for all home matches. Leslie coached at All Out, ordered uniforms, handled hotel bookings, prepared countless meals and hosted team gatherings. Thanks to ALL parent volunteers for your incredible support in 2016!
See you all at the Banquet, Aurora Church, December 4th.
God bless you all and Go Knights!

Post-Season is Here!
It's been a great year for the entire program and we couldn't be more excited about the future of the program. Stacked with talented players. C-Team, JV and Varsity all had great years. For Varsity it was a tough senior night but we tip our cap to Archbishop Murphy as they should do very well in the 2A playoffs, while we finish the regular season with one more match, on the road vs Cedar Park. A quick turn happens with the arrival of District Playoffs, and round 1 is home in MMG this Wednesday. The winner of our match on Wednesday will play for the District 1 title up at Lynden Christian against LC in all likelihood.
FInal Stretch of COnference Play
Two more big matches remain in Cascade Conference Play, beginning with Monday's final regular season home match vs Archbishop Murphy. The Wildcats took round 1 3-0 at ATM back on September 22nd, and have remained unbeaten since. With a win, the Wildcats will clinch the conference championship. A win for the Knights would make our final match vs Cedar Park Christian a must-win to make any claim on the conference title.
Monday is also Senior Night where we will honor our four amazing seniors who have meant so much to the strong traditions of the KING'S VOLLEYBALL program. Megan Payne, Marlee Young, Anna Hoff and Casey Kispert will all be honored with a brief pre-game ceremony before the real action takes place between these two great rivals.
All matches from this point on are meaningful and have implications to post-season seeding.

SHERIDAN CLASSIC WRAP
It's always amazing what God does in bringing together a special mix of girls that combined, contribute to a unique recipe. It is an honor to coach this young group. They are evolving before our very eyes and have limitless potential!
We had a great time in Spokane. The van-rides, the meals, the fellowship. The competition was also very encouraging! The girls made a statement in morning Pool Play by sweeping Granger, Central Valley and Deer Park. A little humility was found in losses to Mead and Lewiston but it all ended on a high note with a victory over Lakeside of 9 Mile Falls. 13th place overall is one of the highest finishes we've ever had!
Thanks to all of the parents and family who made the trip to Spokane to cheer us on! Special thanks to Dee Mason for blessing us on Saturday with great food! Thanks also to Leslie Young for the Friday night salad, and our video-crew of Greg Hoff and Matt McCutchen for taping matches!
We now head into the final month of our journey. This young team has all the tools to make a run but time will tell if they can put it all together in these final weeks. Only 4 conference matches remain and then post-season. Cedarcrest, Sultan, ATM and Cedar Park. Time to get back in the gym! Go Knights!

A Win, A loss, ALL GOOD!
The young and talented Knights took a step forward after a rousing win over Cedar Park Christian and 3-set sweep at the hands of Bothell the following night. Cedar Park is a conference rival and a good team. Lead by Sam Dreschell, Cedar Park has the firepower to go deep into the state tournament, as they did last year, placing 2nd to LC. The Knights came out on the attack in the first set, with a strong serving game and great passing. The quick start allowed the young and inexperienced players to gain a comfort level at home, winning the 1st set 25-17. Cedar Park swung back hard in the 2nd with a 25-10 thumping and suddenly momentum had completely swung. Credit the Knights who remained loose and unfazed as they bounced back to take the 3rd 26-24 and cruised in the 4th, 25-19. The following night featured a non-conference match vs the talented 4A Bothell who thumped the Knights in straight-sets. Tough for sure to play the following night after an emotional win but no excuse and full credit to Bothell who has a very good team with a strong libero and excellent middles. The Knights learned much last week and look to apply those lessons in the weeks ahead!
HEADS ARE DOWN AND WORKING HARD
The entire program is finding its stride in the routine of school, practice, matches, etc. We have been struck by the incredible talent all throughout the program, all of which was on display at rival Archbishop Murphy. Both C and JV had their way with a C-Team sweep and JV taking 2 out of 3. While Varsity lost in 3, it didn't take a coaches eye to see just how close the match was and the growth that occurred in those 3 sets. ATM was announced as the #1 ranked 2A team earlier in the day, an honor that seemed fitting given the power of their outside attack. The young Knights embodied the creed of "any-team, any-time, any-place" by matching ATM blow-for-blow and serving for set point in both the 1st and 3rd sets. We now look forward to the next opportunity on October 17th, in our house. The future looks very bright for KING's VOLLEYBALL and we are as excited as we have ever been to see what God has in store for us!
The schedule continues to challenge as as we wrap-up September and head into October. SUNDOME FESTIVAL WRAP
The Knights experienced the highs and lows of a season all contained within one tournament. The annual Sundome Festival is always a great way to face better competition early in the season in a venue you hope to come back to at State. This year, the Sundome Tourney proved to be a great eye opener for the young but talented Knights. The morning got off to a rocky start as the Knights had a huge mental challenge during the first set of the Lakewood match. A lineup error caused rotation confusion that took half the set to figure out but the girls faced the challenge of having to adapt and figure it out on the court. Lakewood was unable to take advantage of the opportunity and the Knights came storming back to take the set 25-23 and cruise in the 2nd (25-12) for the win. Two more solid and much smoother wins vs Pasco and Pullman had the Knights feeling pretty good about their chances as a #1 in the afternoon Gold bracket. First up in bracket play was none other than longtime District rival, Lynden Christian. With Coach Fransen's sophomore niece
Big Week 2 - Big Test
The Knights started great with two wins in week one but a home match vs South Whidbey, a road match at Cedarcrest followed by the annual Sundome Festival Tournament this Saturday should give a good indication of what the 2016 Knights have to offer.
South Whidbey is a much improved program with a quality nucleus that will come into MMG on Tuesday with evil intentions. The Falcons beat the Knights at home for the first time in over a decade two years ago. While the 2015 Knights evened the score, 2016 is a different year and anything can happen. Cedarcrest always packs the gym with rowdy football guys who test the nerves of opposing teams, while the Sundome tourney always provides great competition and perhaps most importantly, a chance for our young team to gain much needed experience playing in the venue that hosts the 1A State Tournament in November.
It's a long road to State 2016 but an early glimpse into the Knights chances of getting there and playing well can be found this week.

The Regular Season Begins
A busy first two weeks of tryouts, retreat, practices and a jamboree for varsity give way to the beginning of the 2016 regular season. With Lakewood's departure from the conference, every school had the opportunity to schedule two non-conference opponents. Edmonds Woodway is up first. Our 4A neighbor has visited MMG only in past Friendship Tournaments. Later this month we'll visit 4A Bothell.
For this first week it's EW on Tuesday followed by our first road-trip up to Granite Falls on Thursday. JV/C play at 5:15pm on Tuesday, Varsity plays 7pm both days. No C Team scheduled at Granite Falls. They will practice instead.
This week also marks the beginning of the school year on Wednesday. Best of luck to all our student athletes as they get their first crack at the balance of student and athlete.

Team Camp 2016
A great effort from all went into our 2016 Team Camp. Tired minds, tired bodies but loads of improvements were made! Our 12th straight GMS Team Camp is in the books. Thanks to our coaches, Nicole, Hannah and Camilla! We went through the mechanics of the game: from passing to serving, to hitting, to defense, to blocking. We then covered team offense and defense and all points in between. The coaches challenged the girls minds as well as their bodies.
We finish our summer with the Glacier Peak Summer League as well as our King's Volleyball Camps.

Gold medal team camp - july 11-14th
Over the years, our week of Team Camp has proven to be pivotal in our preparation for the season ahead… this year will be no exception! We are looking forward, not only to a week of intensive individual improvement and team development, but also the opportunity to collectively gain an understanding of the true character of our team, which can only be found when challenged to go beyond our current capabilities. Thank you all for your dedication to becoming your best.
We will have 3 outstanding GMS coaches joining our King’s Coaching Staff in leading this year’s camp. We have been working together, planning the camp, over the past few weeks and want to introduce them to you…

Nicole Lawlor – Pensacola Volleyball Club – Pensacola, CA
Many of you will remember Nicole from last year’s camp. Once again to coach our camp, Nicole will be taking a break from her role with Team USA, where she is currently working with the Women’s National Team as they prepare for the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games. We are excited to be working with Nicole again this year as she leads our camp. Nicole played collegiately at UC San Diego (2004-06) where she earned Conference Player of the Year honors (2006) as an Outside Hitter. That same year, Nicole was honored as the UCSD Athlete of the Year. Nicole got into coaching after her playing career came to an end and when she is not with the helping Karch with the National Team she coaches with Pensacola Volleyball Club in Pensacola, Florida.

2015
so proud and so thankful
How else can we be other than completely thankful to God for the opportunity to play this great game, to make special lifelong friendships and memories, to honor our school, our families and the kingdom of Christ? The standards are high at King's and whether we like it or not, the annual measuring stick is a state title. That much was assured with our back-to-back titles a few years go. However, the goal is not to win state. The goal(s) are much bigger and lasting. To be the best you can be, to commit to something bigger than yourself, to die to your team. Team first, etc, etc, etc. The 2015 KING'S VOLLEYBALL team established at the beginning that they were about something much bigger. This group wanted to be about something more than winning and achievements on the court. To leave a legacy for the entire program and those that would follow for years to come. This group was about something more and they truly embraced that ideal throughout the 2015 season.
As we look back on a year that really starts in June with spring practices and continues through a summer of tournaments, open gyms and team camp, we reflect on an amazing journey that is similar in many ways to years past but distinct because of the girls, the personality of the team and the ups and downs along the way. Clearly this was a talented group with girls that are/were accomplished and experienced. Many of the girls on this team were in the gym back in those championship years, watching and cheering from the stands and imagining a day when they would take the court in the Mike Martin Gym, and God willing, the State Tournament. Girls that have been in the gym learning the system since the 3rd/4th grade. Some of course picked it up much later but have been incredibly committed to their craft ever since. 2015 was "their time" and they made the most of it.
Looking back there were milestones. The amazing Gold Medal Team Camp and our coaches, Nicole Lawlor and Katie Meyers. Coach Lawlor in particular was a force and in one short week made an amazing impact. We thank her and will beg for her return. The season kicked off in convincing fashion as the Knights did what King's Knights do - win volleyball matches. Cedarcrest, Granite, Lakewood, South Whidbey, Sultan, all fell. A significantly stronger Cascade Conference would prove challenging but a convincing sweep of longtime rival Archbishop gave way two days later to a tough loss to eventual State runner-up, Cedar Park Christian. Off to Spokane in search of an identify and one was found as some of the best volleyball this program has ever played emerged as Gold was won over strong 3A opponents in Mt Spokane and Auburn Riverside. Maybe this team did have what it would take to win a title? The 2nd half was incredible highlighted by the most amazing comeback in program history. Down 0-2 and 22-24 in the 3rd set to Cedar Park Christian - a ball that was seemingly in, was called out. A little lucky perhaps but the girls made the most of it by completing the set win and then taking the next two sets - setting off an amazing celebration in Mike Martin!
Post-Season play proved intense as Kara Bajema's Lynden Christian Lyncs swept the Knights at Districts. The loss however was insightful and a feeling of redemption was possible if given the chance to play again at State. That chance almost came as the Knights qualified for State in a loser-out match in Bi-Districts to Nooksack and then an opening victory in the Sundome vs Granger. Only Kalama stood in the way. Kalama, the team from Southwest Washington that few knew much about, other than their unblemished record and only 3 sets lost all year. The small school proved resilient, scrappy and more than a worthy foe. Kalama jumped out big in the first set opening a big double-digit gap but the much-preached need for composure was showcased as the Knights battled back to tie it late, only to drop the first set. A confidence carried-over to set two as the Knights seized control and handed Kalama their 4th set loss of the year to even the match at 1-1. Momentum swung back-and-forth over the next two frames and eventually, a 5th set to decide who would play in the semis against LC. Kalama made plays when it mattered most winning the 5th 15-12.
After a nights rest, the girls were guided to reset their minds on a major character test. Not the goal anyone identified but after 11 straight medals and never losing consecutive matches at State, a new challenge was at hand. Something else to play for - Legacy. Two consecutive wins on day two and a 5th place finish in State! It's always good to win your final match, no matter what.
71 1A teams in 2015 and we were top 5. From 2006-2015, a 10-year record at State of 32-8.
The agony of defeat. Carl McGown once said, "sometimes all you can do is be satisfied with the dignity of your effort." Wise words from one of the best coaches in USA Volleyball history and the founder and principle architect of Gold Medal Squared. We are more than proud. We are thankful for the incredible opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself - to be about Team.
Once again we thank all of the families that make this KING'S VOLLEYBALL family work. A huge effort goes into this little high school volleyball program and it wouldn't be possible without our parent volunteers! Too many to name but we thank you all for the love you shower on this program.
God bless and thank you for an amazing 2015!

the hay is in the barn
Pick your favorite cliche' and go with it because the 2015 Knights are a near finished product. King's tied a bow on its final practice in Mike Martin with a combination of work topped off by some fun as the final preparations for State were made. Continued focus on Serve and Serve-Receive, where the game is typically won and lost were the focus, along with defense. Intensity was on display as the girls know this was the last opportunity to work out whatever little part of the game they are focused on individually. The team is poised to make the most of this run and whatever God has in store for the Knights, there is a real appreciation for the opportunity to travel to Yakima and participate in the State tournament. Regardless of our fate, this team is bonded and takes nothing for granted. It's the final "business trip" of the year but making it fun and enjoyable is top of mind for all.
We look forward to seeing lots of Red and White in the stands this weekend!

STATE 2015
Nobody wants to be the King's team that doesn't go to State and that distinction will have to go to another team in another year as the 2015 Knights survived and actually thrived in a loser-out affair in the Bi-District Tournament, upending Nooksack Valley for the 2nd time in a week, this time 3-0 to get the berth to State. If the big trophy is to come back over the Pass with the Knights for the first time since 2009, it will most certainly be earned as the draw is a tough one but, as the saying on the t-shirt goes - any team, any time, any place. First up is Granger who went 14-1 on the year and took 2nd in their District 5 Tournament, losing the final 3-1 to Naches Valley.
Win or stay home
11 straight appearances in the State Tournament is on the line Saturday, November 7th at 1pm as King's will play the winner of the 11am Nooksack Valley vs Forest Ridge Match. Forest Ridge finished the regular season 9-2 the Emerald City Division 1 league and 12-4 overall, while Nooksack finished 4-8 in the Northwest Conference, 6-8 overall. King's defeated Nooksack in round 1 of the District 1 tournament 3-1. The winner will be a #3 seed to the State, November 13-14th in Yakima. King's placed 2nd last year, losing the finals to Lynden Christian who won their first title. Since becoming a 1A school back in 2006, King's has placed at State as follows:
2014 - 2nd
2013 - 7th
2012 - 5th
2011 - 3rd
2010 - 2nd
2009 - 1st

District showdown goes to Lc
Lynden Christian took the District Championship in straight-sets (3-0) over the Knights at Cedar Park Christian, Saturday. Although the match was much closer than the final outcome would suggest but credit goes to the Lyncs who controlled the defensive side of the game to earn a return trip to State and put the Knights in a position to once again play a loser-out at Bi-Districts on Saturday, November 7th. Same place as 2014 when the Knights placed 4th in the Bi-Districts only to earn the bid to State and advance all the way to the title match vs LC who took the title.
Saturday's match will be at 1pm at Overlake High School vs the District 2 #3. Forest Ridge and Overlake play a tie-breaker on Monday, November 2nd which will help finalize the standings in the Emerald City League and determine who will play Nooksack Valley on Saturday at 1pm. The Knights have a first-round bye and will face the winner at 1pm. Win or go home.

Let the fun begin
After our final conference match vs Cedar Park Christian, the post-season gets going fast with the District 1 Tournament, Bi-Districts and then, State. The Knights will have a challenging road full of obstacles as the 1A field is full of some of the best collection of talent we can remember. Anyone of 7 teams or so has a shot at the title that always requires teams to play their best when their best is needed. Talent, health and a little luck will ultimately decide who comes home with the hardware.

conference play proves tough
For years the Cascade Conference offered very little in the way of competition but that is no longer the case. Some of the best volleyball is now played right here in the Cascade Conference. Cedar Park Christian won round 1 at CPC 4-1. Credit strong play from Cedar Park Junior Outside Hitter, Sam Drechsel as the key difference in the match. A really good CPC student section also let the Knights have it as Cedar Park took sole possession of 1st place in the conference. Archbishop Murphy is always a battle but the Knights managed to escape with the win at home. Junior Outside Hitter Sam Hayward was formidable and the next round will be no cake-walk at Archbishop. The Knights have also dropped sets at home to both Lakewood and a tenacious South Whidbey team that fought every ball. Both opponents will represent huge challenges on the road during the 2nd half of conference play.
Struggling some and questioning who we are and how good we can be, the Knights traveled to Spokane to play in the annual Linda Sheridan Classic. After taking 2nd in Pool Play to #1 ranked 4A and tournament champ, West Valley of Yakima, King's settled an old score against Colville to close pool play 1-1. Colville was our opponent back in a 2011 state semi-finals that easily featured the two best teams in the field. The bitter 5-set knock-down drag-out loss, was a big blow given how special that that team was. We cruised past Colville easily in a 2-0 win in Spokane. The winning continued in bracket play, in fact, we didn't drop another set! Lakewood, Columbia River, Mt Spokane and in the finals, 2014 3A State Champ and defending tournament champ, Auburn Riverside. The resounding Gold championship provided a glimpse into the potential of the 2015 King's Knights and only time will tell if that potential can be realized.
Thankfully the Cascade Conference is now a great test! 2nd half here we come.

heat check - round 1
A week that saw Archbishop Murphy and Cedar Park Christian as well as a trip over the mountains to play some of the best teams in the state, proved to be a big test for the little engine that could. Archbishop Murphy came into MMG and provided a big test with Sam Hayward leading the way with pounding kills but ultimately the Knights survived and advanced with a 3-1 victory over their long-time rival. Cedar Park Christiana also benefited from a great crowd who roared with approval every time Junior Outside Hitter, Sam Drechsel landed a kill. Cedar Park took the match in 4 sets to take sole possession of first place and send the Knights over to Spokane searching to regain its winning ways.
A tough pool with Colville and West Valley of Yakima proved formidable but the Knights placed 2nd after a 2011 State-Semis-Avenging win over Colville and a 0-3 loss to West Valley.

test coming
A 5-0 start certainly has been nice but after a week that features home matches against perennial rival, Archbishop Murphy and 2014 Conference Champ, Cedar Park Christian...not to mention the annual Crossover Tournament in Spokane, the 2015 Knights will know a lot more about how it handles the heat. A strong heat-check indeed as both teams will be looking to do damage against the Knights. Longtime rival, Archbishop Murphy is always a worthy test and while the Knights have clearly had the best of this rivalry over the years, the Wildcats have a roster full of talented players, lead by outside hitter Sam Hayward. Archbishop always travels well too and thus, MIke Martin will be a great atmosphere for anyone looking to see a good volleyball match this Tuesday.
Cedar Park Christian handed the Knights two losses in conference play last year. Lead by junior Outside Hitter, Sam Drechsel, Cedar Park has a strong team returning and is no doubt looking to repeat its conference success of 2014, especially after the way the Knights upset Cedar Park at state in a 5-set thriller that sent the Knights to the championship match vs Lynden Christian. The match will also be a celebration of sorts as Cedar Park Christian coach, Marni Drechsel will undoubtedly be a focal point and deservingly so, after she collapsed last week during their match last week vs Archbishop. God had His hands on Marni as angels helped revive her until medics were able to get her to the hospital. Our entire program continues to pray for Marni and her family during this difficult time.
Finally, the Knights will travel to Spokane to play in the annual Spokane Crossover tournament on Saturday. Teams from all over the Pacific Northwest, from all classifications will be on hand to battle it out. No better way to test this little 1A machine than by taking on all comers!

It's finally time to begin the 2015 season as we open up Cascade Conference play vs Cedarcrest on Sept 10th. 2015 looks to be a very interesting year for the conference as the Knights placed 2nd in 2014 for the first time in over a decade. Cedar Park Christian was a newcomer to the conference last year and beat the Knights twice to help take the title. CPC has their big guns back and should be the favorite to win the conference, but along with a perennially strong Knights team, Archbishop Murphy will have their say as will the ever improving South Whidbey Falcons.
King's replaces 5 key seniors including standouts, setter, Rachel Morinaga and middle blocker, Savanna Hanson. Hannah Green also graduated, leaving 3 key starting positions to be filled. Casey Kispert played back-up to Morinaga last year but looks poised to take the reigns this year. Kispert will see familiar faces on the front line in Outside Hitters Daylee Hanson and Sydney Gaenz. Both are 3 year varsity starters and senior go-to attackers. Returning junior Libero Anna Hoff is back and ready to anchor the back-row serve-receive and defense. A pair of senior Middles in Hannah Greatzer and Morgan Grimm are eager to make memories on their final turn this fall. Key defensive specialists, senior Elizabeth Johnson and 2014 swing player, Elle Mason should play key roles in keeping the offense in rhythm by digging balls that can be converted for kills. New to varsity is also setter, Tessa Foley and freshman outside, Baily McCutchen. Both stand ready to answer the call as the 2015 Knights have the experience and the skill-set to have a very successful 2015. Of course it takes something special to go deep in November and only time will tell if the Knights of 2015 have what it takes.
One match at a time. Cedarcrest, here we come.

team white takes it!
A fun night of scrimmages with a revised format that included a clock and a running score for all 3 scrimmages helped make for a fun and efficient evening of volleyball to kick-off the 2015 season. C-Team got things started with some impressive play. Many long rallies featuring big kills, great sprawling defensive plays and well run offenses had the coaches smiling as this developmental level showed that they are ready to play! Team White had a 3 point edge heading into to the JV scrimmage. A battle ensued with JV and more continued strong play, with many big kills and impressive digs from this pre-varsity group. Team Red erased the 3 point edge to tie things up heading into the varsity match!
Varsity got off to a shaky start for Team White as Team Red appeared to have the edge with the experience of Seniors Daylee Hanson and Sydney Gaenz leading the way with stellar offensive distribution from Casey Kispert. Senior Morgan Grimm controlled the net while Elle Mason and Senior Elizabeth Johnson anchored the defense and a 6 point gap seemed insurmountable as the clock wound down. But Team White kept battling with big contributions from Libero, Anna Hoff. Marlee Young was a force at Outside Hitter with big kills that put the pressure on Team Red. Megan Payne made some big defensive plays that kept the ball alive and Tessa Foley gave her hitters some great sets to work with. With the clock stopping on plays under a minute left, Team White took advantage and got a big-time serving effort from Hoff to even things up at 86-86 as time expired.
Bonus time as you always have to win by 2 ensued and Team White completed the comeback against the upperclassmen.
Next up we beat up on somebody else!

a hot summer!
What an impressive group of players in the program this summer! Girls came out in droves this spring and summer for their opportunity to be a part of KING'S VOLLEYBALL 2015. The coaches were humbled by the incredible participation that saw two courts full of girls consistently come out for spring practices, team camp and open gym after open gym. Not one thing was mandatory yet girls were there lined up at the door often, eager to get in the gym and get some feedback on any and all parts of the game. A fully-engaged coaching staff was enthusiastic about the turnout which was both challenging and encouraging to design an environment that promoted competition and individual player development.
The girls and the program as a whole will undoubtedly see the benefits of the hard work put in by 30+ girls in Spring Practices, Friendship Tournament, Gold Medal Team Camp, Scrimmages, Glacier Peak Summer League and lots of Open Gyms. In the end we placed 2nd in Gold and 1st in Silver in the Friendship Tournament and 3rd overall in the Glacier Peak Summer League.
Gold Medal Team Camp was a huge success with Katie Myers returning for her 2nd tour on Court 2 and Nicole Lawlor coming from Team USA to handle Court 1. The girls loved both coaches and were thrilled with the the experience that was challenging but engaging and dynamic. Big progress was made on individual and team levels, reminding all that present ability doesn't predict future ability.
The girls also came back into the gym to earn service hours and coach the future stars of the program with both our Elementary All Skills Camp and Junior High Preseason Camp. As usual the high school girls were the stars of the camps with several totally engaged at coaching and making the camps as fun as possible!
Thanks to everyone who came out consistently this spring and summer. You get better by playing and hard work combined with a mindful approach will pay off. Thanks for your contribution to the high standards we value in the program! The road to State 2015 is underway!
The gym doors are now closed. Enjoy the remainder of your summer in the sun and with friends and family. August 24th is fast-approaching and we are excited for the journey that awaits!
Blessings to all!

Team Camp wrap
We had a GREAT Team Camp! Nicole and Katie from Gold Medal Squared were excellent with the girls and it was amazing to see the improvement in all over the course of the 4 days. Each court started with fundamental skill training and progressively went through all areas of the game, from passing, serving, attacking, individual defense, team defense, serve-receive, team offense, etc. Each court competed throughout the camp which emphasizes the culture we continue to foster in the program. The girls were certainly challenged physically but even more mentally. “The mind is the athlete and the body is simply the means to use it.”
Big thanks to our parent volunteers who hosted coaches, prepared and served nutritious meals and shuttled coaches here and there. Big thank you to Greg and Joelle Hoff who once again hosted the BBQ on Wednesday. Once again, the girls were treated to great food and even better fellowship with team Charades and Lip Sync competitions. You all continue to bless the girls and coaches and the program as a whole. Thank you!

gold medal squared team camp
If you're looking for a key ingredient to the sustained success of the KING'S VOLLEYBALL program, a good place to start is with our annual Gold Medal Squared Team Camp. For the 9th straight year, coaches from Gold Medal Squared will partner with our coaching staff to do a comprehensive customized training program that will cover all essential fundamental skills and go even deeper for our advanced players into team offensive and defensive concepts. Our coaching staff will also be on hand throughout the week to guide our players through what is an intense week in the gym. Gold Medal Squared coaching methodologies are currently in practice at many top collegiate programs throughout the country including the University of Washington and are also the backbone of our USA National Men's and Women's program.
We'll update details about the camp in the coming days/weeks. In the meantime, here is a video that overviews Gold Medal Squared camps.

2nd place and silver champs!
What a great day in both Mike Martin and King's Garden Gym's for the 2015 Friendship Tournament. 12 teams total including our King's 1 and King's 2 teams were in action with a good number of quality opponents on hand. King's 1 breezed through pool play, taking a 2 seed to bracket action while King's 2 competed in a 3-team Silver bracket in the afternoon.
King's 1 faced Kamiak for the 2nd time in the afternoon in the Gold Final. While Kamiak took the Gold in 2 sets, King's 1 walked away feeling good overall about a great day of volleyball competition that saw a number of girls see action against strong competition. Spring and summer is all about learning, growing and evaluating strengths and weaknesses and while we always want to win, much was learned and the coaching staff comes away optimistic about the talent and potential of the 2015 season.
King's 2 had a great afternoon, winning the Silver bracket championship! With a large group of girls on the roster, the coaches were able to see the future of the program in competition. Thanks to all involved for their patience as playing time was a challenge for many.
We appreciate all of our families who participated in volunteer jobs that made the tournament a huge success!
